Presented by Greenhouse Theatre Project - The Threepenny Opera premiered in Berlin in 1928. Written and composed by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, the show was loosely based on John Gay’s Beggar’s Opera, and was an attempt to create a new kind of opera and musical theatre. Set in the impoverished back alleys of Victorian London, The Threepenny Opera follows underworld antihero Mackie Messer aka Mack the Knife as he woos women and eludes the authorities. The sly melodies of composer Kurt Weill and the daring of dramatist Bertolt Brecht come together to create a socialist critique of the capitalist world.
